November 30, 2011 has been announced as a date of the Energy Star meeting and live webinar dedicated to the review of Draft I of Energy Star Lamps Specification. The meeting aims to gather input from partners and stakeholders for future development of the light bulbs specification. The deadline for in-person registration is November 25.

Electronics News reports an exciting research development from Siemens Corporate Technology and OSRAM. Using a High Throughput Experimentation (THE) they were able to develop new dark red luminescent material suited for light-emitting diodes.The novel luminescent material is intended for general lighting warm-toned white LEDs, LCD backlights, and automotive LED applications.

Forbes reports on the release of the Goldman Sachs analysts report on LED/OLED industry. According to the report, Goldman Sachs analyst Brian Lee appointed Buy ratings on LED lighting company Cree and OLED technology company Universal Display; LED equipment maker Veeco received a Neutral rating, and sets a Sell on Rubicon Technology.

SYLVANIA has released results of the 4th annual SYLVANIA Socket Survey— the industry’s only measurement/ barometer of the changing lighting landscape and public attitudes about efficient lighting and awareness of the upcoming national phase-out of incandescent light bulbs— starting in January with the 100 watt. This year’s benchmark survey revealed that for the first time a majority of American (55 percent) are aware of the 2007 congressional legislation mandating the phase-out of inefficient lighting.

AIXTRON SE today announced that Xiang Nang Hualei Optoelectronics Ltd, of Hunan Province, China, has ordered eight new AIXTRON MOCVD reactors to boost capacity for GaN HB LEDs. The order includes six CRIUS II reactors in a 55x2-inch wafer configuration and two AIX G5 HT 56x2-inch wafer configuration systems.

Cree, Inc.’s Ruud Lighting subsidiary, based in Racine, Wisc., held groundbreaking ceremony on November 15, 2011 to highlight a 208,000-square-foot expansion to its manufacturing facility. The company’s $24.5 million investment will focus on manufacturing and assembly of LED lighting and is expected to create 469 new full-time jobs over the next four years.
