Company's Entrance into LED Industry Marked by Name Change
Aug 11, 2011 The LED industry has been growing steadily and this becomes apparent with heavy national investments in research both in China and Taiwan. Now, another heavy competitor enters the LED industry, its arrival symbolized by a simple name change.
Like its old name GT Solar suggests, the company's previous focus was on the solar industry. Now the new GT Advanced Technologies announced early this August that its futures plans would involve the production of LEDs, and it appears that this expansion was the next step for the company. Its purchase in July 2010 of Crystal Systems, Inc., a "pioneer in the field of crystallizing sapphire material", marked the change in the role of the company. GT is involved in virtually all sides of the sapphire material market, producing the material and supplying the Advanced Sapphire Furnaces (ASF), the technology used to make sapphire material. The $1 billion in orders for ASF the company has received since December 2010 show it is gaining a strong foothold in this area.
