Interview on LED Mass Production Reveals Cost Problem and Solution
Aug 12, 2011 As LEDs gain popularity manufacturers will inevitably face the question brought up by mass production: How can they keep cost down without compromising on quality? In an interview with Kent Lu, the Regional Manager of Henkel Asia Pacific, a solution is investigated to this sticky situation. Mr. Lu's experience with the Asian Market and the industrial material business led to his analysis of the ways manufacturers can reduce cost through different adhesives each meant for unique purposes.
Henkel was founded in 1876 and has since gone from 80 to 50,000 employees. Moreover, as one of the top 500 companies in the world, Henkel makes its fortune through key manufactures like cleaner, cosmetics, and adhesives, and as a global company with most of its employees outside of Germany.
Henkel's connection to the LED industry is it provides die attach adhesives and sealants for LED chip package, and thermal pad for thermal dissipation, among others. Lu affirms that for mass production to be successful, it is thermal dissipation and improving LED encapsulation that is most important. However, there will never be a time that one adhesive is universally compatible for any form of lighting, and there will be times when
other adhesives will prove more fitting.
Lu continues to give his advice on how high-quality adhesives will improve LEDs' performance, how matching a specific light model with a specific adhesive will keep costs low during manufacturing, and the ways it will reflect based on the state of the current LED adhesive market.
