Ultrabooks Will Cause LED Backlight Market to Grow Research Shows

Sep 8, 2011
Recently, ultrabooks were introduced into the notebook market and have since been gaining momentum in the IT industry. As a result, market research firm TrendForce has just released a new study on this growing "ultrabook revolution" and the correlating effects it will have on the LED industry.

Since MacBook Air has been released, other PC developers like Intel have been in a rush to produce a competitive thin and light ultrabook, with a long battery life and better computing efficiency. Part of this energy efficiency will be dependent on the thin and light LED backlights. The energy efficiency of LEDs will be key in extending battery life for these computers.

There is little doubt of the rise in demand for LED backlights once the ultrabook industry spreads. Already, Japanese LED manufacturers have started focusing more on the LED backlight market; both Nichia and TG have increased shipments of LED backlights products. In time, there will also be a growing demand for thinner LED form factors to accommodate thinner ultrabooks, causing more competition in the LED industry. According to LEDinside analyst Renee Liao, it is estimated that by 2015 "LEDs used in ultrabooks will account for 30% of total notebook LED use."

With the rising popularity of ultrabooks, there will be a higher demand for thinner and more efficient LED backlights. Those from the lighting industry who will be able to provide these types of backlights stand to highly profit.
