LumiGrow Provides Horticultural Lights for Green Winter Farm
Sep 20, 2011
LumiGrow, Inc. has today announced its work with Green Winter Farm in Palmer, Alaska, where the indoor farm will be retrofitted with energy-efficient lighting. As a leader in LED-based horticultural lighting, LumiGrow will provide Green Winter Farm with the ability to cut energy use and cost in half.
Due to the Alaskan climate, most food is imported out of state, leading to higher costs for families. The other alternative has been to grow food in greenhouses, another expensive option because of the associated high energy requirements. The high energy consumption is owed to the HID technology used, with half the energy wasted for providing sections of the color spectrum that plants do not use.
However, with the new horticultural LEDs from LumiGrow, both energy efficiency and lighting accuracy will eliminate the high costs of maintaining a greenhouse. The LEDs will also significantly reduce the energy spent on temperature regulation, unlike "hot-running conventional HID lights." (Green Winter Farm Founder, Crystal Boze) These LED fixtures will lead to less expensive crops because of their high energy efficiency and effectiveness as a plant lighting source.
