PLASA 2011 Activities: A Recount
Sep 22, 2011
This past week the PLASA tradeshow made its annual appearance of 2011 at Earls Court in London, UK. The show's role as a gathering of event, installation, and entertainment technology has gained notoriety. LED lighting providers have noted the importance of the event, and given the past few years' surge in the LED lighting industry, it was no surprise that this year's tradeshow had a strong LED presence.
One of the new additions to the event was the "LED Shootout" hosted by the Society of Television Lighting and Design (STLD). This project involved volunteered LED-based fixtures, provided by manufacturers, that were each compared in a presentation theater. Another area was more nostalgic, where the LEDs lit up an 8-meter-wide cyclorama against older 1250W tungsten-halogen lights.
There were also some judging competitions among those present, with eight PLASA Awards presented for Innovation, and a Gold Award and a special award for Sustainability. One of the winners for Innovation was the MAC Aura Luminaire, a new fixture produced by Martin Professional (Denmark). Other winners included GDS, LED Engin, and i-Pix, companies based in the UK or United States.
