Ted Tohma Receives Annual OLED Leadership Award
Sep 27, 2011 On Monday, September 27, 2011 Ted Tohma, former Pioneer executive who initiated OLED display development and manufacturing, was presented with Annual OLED Leadership Award at the thirteenth annual OLEDs World Summit. "Ted Tohma started it all" says Barry Young, Managing Director of the OLED Association. In 1997, Pioneer manufactured and sold the first commercial OLED display and an industry was launched. Ted also created a joint venture between Pioneer, Semiconductor Energy Laboratory and Sharp to build p-Si backplanes as he prophesied the progression from passive matrix to active matrix technology.
Ted was a "pioneer" for Pioneer and the rest of the industry. He organized the group within Pioneer that:
-- Unlocked the business opportunity
-- Determined the architecture of the OLED stack
-- Created the manufacturing process
-- Marketed and sold the first PMOLED displays
He had the foresight and vision to lay out a plan which transitioned the PMOLED operation into an AMOLED operation by establishing a joint venture between Pioneer, Sharp and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory to build a p-Si active matrix line. Tohma's dream of AMOLED commercial production was realized in 2007 by Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) when the company started volume production of the first mass-produced AMOLEDs. OLED display revenue in 2010 was over US$1B and should reach US$3B in 2011. There are now over 20 companies producing OLED displays or lighting panels throughout the world.
Ted Tohma is a now a world recognized expert in OLEDs who championed the creation of the OLED display industry. Ted was a 35-year employee and Executive Managing Officer at Pioneer OLED and was responsible for setting up the world's first OLED manufacturing line. He now consults with several organizations in the OLED industry. In 1990, he was awarded the SID Journal Display of the Year Gold Award; in 2000, the SID Special Recognition Award and, in 2003, the Kenjiro Sakurai Commemorative Award. He is a graduate of Waseda University, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Dept. of Physics.
Introduced in 2010, the OLED Leadership Award is sponsored by Intertech-Pira, the OLED Association, Cambridge Display Technologies, Corning, Idemitsu Kosan, LG Display, Novaled, Samsung Mobile Display, IGNIS Innovation and Universal Display Corporation.
