Philips Experts Believe OLED Lighting will be Mainstream by the End of 2012
Oct 11, 2011 TechRadar UK in the exclusive interview with Dietmar Thomas, Communication Specialist for Philips, reports that Philips plans to make OLED a mainstream lighting technology by the end of 2012.
It is said that due to the significant investment (€40m) that Philips has made into OLED production line in Aachen, Germany, the OLED panel prices are expected to drop to €10-€20 for the cheapest modules. It should be noted that at the moment OLED panels sold by Philips range from rom €70 all the way up to €800, but as of next year Mr. Thomas expects them to be around €50 for largest OLED pane.
Yet, it is not only the cost that Philips wants to improve. They are working on slimming down their OLED panels from current thickness o 1.8mm to the super thin 1mm sheets. They also note that OLED panels produce light of a very nice quality and that their flexibility would allow people to think in a completely new way designing roger home and office spaces.
