OSRAM LEDs Used to Illuminate Streets in Africa

Nov 4, 2011 In 2010, BEKA selected LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors for its luminaires to light South Africa’s stadiums during the World Cup. When it came time to select LEDs for the new BEKA LEDlume street lights project, BEKA again decided to partner with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, choosing the Oslon SSL LED. Measuring just 3 mm by 3 mm, the Oslon SSL LEDs’ compact size allows for a variety of design possibilities. With a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4,500 K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 70, the luminaires ensure pleasant light conditions which are ideal for street lighting applications.

An additional benefit of the modern LED street light is the high efficiency of Oslon light diodes, which yield more than 100 lumens per watt (lm/W) at 350mA. As a result, the BEKA LEDlume uses approximately 50 percent less energy than previous lighting technologies. For even more energy savings, the BEKA LEDlume can be furnished with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ SFH5711 ambient light sensor, which automatically adapts the brightness of the luminaires to the ambient light or to customer-specified preferences.

Tailored to the environment of Africa

BEKA LEDlume is available in several versions, ranging from 16 to 90W. Depending on the version, 12 to 60 Oslon SSL LEDs per luminaire are required, making them well suited for the demands of Africa’s unique climate. For example, the 12 and 24 volt versions can also be lit with solar power. The luminaires are designed with Africa’s high temperatures in mind, and are able to withstand ambient temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius. Lasting more than 50,000 hours, the average durability of the LED also complies with the L80 Standard, meaning that once the service life of the luminaire has expired, it will still generate more than 80 percent of the original brightness.

Successful Cooperation

Ryan Hunt, Country Manager at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors in South Africa, commented on the renewed cooperation with BEKA: “We are very happy that BEKA has decided to use our Oslon SSL LED in their BEKA LEDlume. The consistently high quality of our products and our good relationship with BEKA are what this project and many other joint projects have been based on.”
