Astronics Wins Contract from US Air Force to Improve Airfield LightingAug 29, 2011 Astronics DME Corporation has reported on August 25 that it was awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract to provide LED airfield lighting for the U.S. Air Force, with a maximum value of $7.4 million. Research Highlights: White Light-Emitting Electrochemical CellAug 29, 2011 Joint efforts of the research team from Umea University, Sweden and Merck KGaA, Germany has resulted in the development of a novel light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) that has air-stable electrodes and a solution-processed single-layer active material that emits warm-white light (CIE coordinates = (0.39, 0.43); color rendering index =83) with significant brightness (B) at a low voltage.
Stars above Manhattan will be seen on Hudson RiverAug 29, 2011 For one week of September new yorkers will be able to see the stars usually hidden by city's light and other pollution. Project "Reflecting the Stars", part of the Climate Week NYC, will run from September 19 to 27 and will project the stars of the night sky above Manhattan onto the Hudson River. The wirelessly controlled solar-powered LED lights have been installed onto the decaying posts of Pier 49, near Bank Street in Manhattan. Pressing a button on the shore will activate the system and light up the castellation that should be above your head at that moment.
